Sewer Lateral Replacement After a Failed Inspection in the Lehigh Valley, PA

Buying a home is exciting—until an inspection uncovers a major problem hiding underground.


That was the situation on this project. Before closing on their new home, a sewer camera inspection revealed that the existing sewer lateral had significant issues, including tree root intrusion and a "belly" in the pipe. Rather than risking future backups and expensive repairs, the homeowners chose to replace the sewer lateral entirely.


Our team installed a brand-new sewer lateral from the house to the public sewer connection, restoring the system to modern standards and giving the new homeowners peace of mind before they moved in.


What Is a Sewer Lateral?


Many homeowners don't realize they own the sewer pipe that runs from their home to the municipal sewer main under the street.


This pipe is called the sewer lateral, and it's responsible for carrying every gallon of wastewater from your sinks, showers, toilets, washing machine, and dishwasher to the public sewer system.


When this underground pipe fails, everything inside the home can be affected.


The Problem this Center Valley Homeowner Encountered

A camera inspection of the existing sewer lateral revealed two major concerns:


  • Tree roots had penetrated the pipe through cracks and joints.

  • The pipe had developed a "belly," creating a low spot where wastewater collected instead of flowing properly.


These problems can eventually lead to:

How We Replaced the Sewer Lateral


This wasn't a simple pipe replacement. The sewer line exited the home approximately 10 feet below grade beneath the foundation footing before continuing roughly 100 feet to the street, where it was still nearly 8 feet underground.

Our crew carefully excavated the entire line while protecting the home's structure and utilities throughout the process.


The new installation included:


  • Approximately 100 feet of new SDR-26 sewer pipe

  • 1B stone bedding installed to township specifications

  • New 4-inch Schedule 40 trap assembly

  • Transition to SDR-26 sewer pipe

  • Two new cleanouts for easier future maintenance


One cleanout was installed inside the basement, while another was installed near the street right-of-way.


Planning Ahead Saves Future Landscaping


One detail many homeowners never see—but can appreciate later—was the interior cleanout.


To install it correctly, we excavated beneath the foundation footing and carefully opened the finished basement floor.


While this added work during construction, it means that if plumbing work is ever needed inside the home years from now, contractors won't have to excavate through landscaping, sidewalks, or the yard to access the sewer line.


Once installation was complete, we professionally repaired the concrete floor, leaving the basement ready for use again.


Sometimes the extra effort today prevents much bigger headaches tomorrow.



Every Installation Is Pressure Tested


Before any trench was backfilled, we verified that every connection was completely watertight.


Our new sewer lateral successfully held 5 pounds of air pressure for over 30 minutes. For comparison, the township requires the system to maintain that same pressure for only 5 minutes to pass inspection.


We believe testing beyond the minimum requirements gives both us and the homeowner confidence that the installation is built to last.


Restoring the Property


Replacing a sewer line means disturbing a significant portion of the yard—but it doesn't have to stay that way.

After testing was complete, we:


  • Backfilled with 12 inches of 1B stone

  • Compacted soil in 12-inch lifts using professional compaction equipment

  • Hauled away excess material

  • Fine graded the yard

  • Installed sifted topsoil

  • Applied premium grass seed

  • Protected the new seed with straw matting


When the grass grows back, very little evidence of the excavation will remain.

  • A brand-new sewer lateral

  • Proper drainage from the home to the public sewer

  • Modern cleanouts for future maintenance

  • A system that exceeded inspection standards

Yes! The line from your house will go to a septic tank for the solids, and then on to the drain field or sand mound, which handles the liquid sewage.
