On this project, the homeowner needed two important improvements: a failing sewer lateral that required replacement and a stone driveway that had become washed out over time. By completing both projects together, we were able to restore the home's underground utility while also improving safe, reliable access to the property.

The Problems
Although the sewer lateral replacement was the primary reason for the project, we quickly discovered another issue once work began.
Problem #1: Aging Sewer Lateral
The existing sewer lateral had reached the point where replacement was the best long-term solution. Since this underground pipe carries all wastewater from the home to the public sewer system, reliability is critical.
Problem #2: A Washed-Out Driveway
The driveway had gradually washed out over the years.
After evaluating the site, we found the left side had experienced significant erosion, while the drainage swale running alongside the driveway had become clogged with years of leaves, sediment, and debris.
Instead of directing water away from the driveway like it was designed to do, the swale had stopped functioning altogether.
Without correcting the drainage, simply adding new stone would have been a temporary fix.
Restoring the Driveway the Right Way
Rather than covering the problem with additional stone, we first corrected the grading. We reduced the higher side of the driveway and restored the proper slope across the entire surface. This created a solid foundation for fresh stone and ensured water would shed properly instead of washing material away again.
Next, we cleaned and reshaped the existing drainage swale. Over time, leaves and sediment had filled the channel, preventing water from flowing where it was intended. Once cleaned, the swale could once again direct runoff away from the driveway, helping protect the new surface for years to come.
Sometimes the longest-lasting repair isn't adding more material—it's making sure water is managed correctly.
Replacing the Sewer Lateral
The sewer lateral replacement was straightforward, but every step was completed with long-term performance in mind.
We excavated the existing sewer line and removed the old pipe, including the cast iron section inside the home. A new Schedule 40 PVC sewer line was installed and connected inside the house.
We also installed a new exterior cleanout to make future maintenance and inspections much easier.
The pipe was bedded and backfilled with 2B clean stone before the trench was completed with properly compacted soil using a jumping jack.
Proper bedding and compaction help protect the new pipe while minimizing future settlement.
Restoring the Property
Once both portions of the project were complete, we restored the disturbed lawn with:
Topsoil
Premium grass seed
Straw cover
Our goal is always to leave a property better than when we arrived—not looking like it was just excavated.
The Finished Result
By the end of the project, the homeowner had:
A brand-new sewer lateral
Modern Schedule 40 PVC piping
An exterior cleanout for easier future maintenance
A properly graded and expanded stone driveway
A restored drainage swale that now functions as intended
A repaired lawn ready to grow back in
More importantly, the improvements addressed the underlying causes of the problems instead of simply treating the symptoms.
